VIDEO: Hayden Brax – Miss Kansas USA 2020

University of Kansas junior Hayden Brax has been named this year's Miss Kansas after competing with 20 other women. She will represent Kansas at the Miss USA Pageant in the spring.

The competition took place on Jan. 19, in the Lied Center. Brax, who is originally from Leawood, balanced her pageantry work on top of being a full-time applied behavioral science and psychology major at the University.

“It’s been really exciting but really surreal,” Brax said.

Her roommate and sorority sister from Chi Omega, Paige Harding, encouraged Brax to start competing in pageants.

“Having a good group of women behind me helped me the most with this pageant,” Brax said.

Harding, a history student at the University, said she helped Brax prepare for the competition by sharing her own pageant experience through the Miss America organization. Harding said Brax had six weeks to prepare and ended up in the top five in her first pageant nearly one year ago.

“She came back and won this year, and it was awesome,” Harding said.

Brax said her favorite parts of the competition were the interview with the judges and the swimwear segment. She said the judges got to see who she was as a person with the one-on-one interviews, and in the swimwear segment, she felt empowered walking down the runway, which helped her gain the confidence she needed to win the competition.

“It was the most incredible experience,” Brax said.

In taking on the new role as Miss Kansas, Brax said she hopes to raise awareness for third world countries, such as Swaziland, where she traveled last December with the nonprofit organization “Give Hope, Fight Poverty.”

“It was astounding to me seeing all the hardships that are happening in other countries,” Brax said.

Brax said she plans to host a donation drive to raise money for the women in Swaziland who are not receiving the same benefits as men.

“Hopefully I can continue to do that as Miss Kansas,” Brax said.

Brax will still be a full-time student at the University, studying applied behavioral science and psychology. After graduating, she said she plans to attend graduate school and get her master’s degree in occupational therapy.

“I want to help with the rehabilitation for children with disabilities,” Brax said.

Brax also said she aims to end the stigma pageantry may have. She said pageants teach women to have good interview skills and be their own person.

“I absolutely believe that anyone can do it,” Brax said. “Any woman can do it.”

Brax said women don’t have to fit into a stereotypical body type to compete in a pageant. She said one of the most important aspects of pageantry is exuding confidence.

“You have to know yourself to show yourself,” Brax said.

Shortly after graduating, Megan moved back to Nebraska and founded her company, The Powerhouse Project, where she now serves as CEO, hiring her first employee in 2019.

The Powerhouse Project aims to equip women globally in the discovery of their identity, the navigation of their purpose, and the path of how to walk out their destiny. Through teaching the practices of a positive self-image, powerful communication skills, as well as sales and business training, Megan, most often known as “Coach Megan,” is sparking the Powerhouse within women all over the world.

Today, Megan enjoys life as both a CEO and a singer/songwriter, with clients in 29 states and a single with over 100,000 spins on Spotify alone. As a 6’ tall woman (flat footed!), Megan is a champion for women owning the uniqueness they were born with, and regularly encourages women to embrace what makes them stand out. Through overcoming an eating disorder, a toxic relationship, and severe bullying growing up, Megan is proud to not only have won the battle against her own struggles, but uses those victory strategies to help tens of thousands of women find healing, and slay their own giants.

As Miss Nebraska USA 2020, Megan is so excited to advocate for the 1.5 Million incredible women in Nebraska from all across the state, and hopes to truly empower, activate, and encourage ever person of whom she comes in contact. “Life is too short to be boring, negative, or lazy!”, she always says. It’s time to make a difference and BE a role model, not just talk about being one.

As a real-life big sister to Miss Nebraska 2019 (MAO) Allie Swanson, winning Miss Nebraska USA 2020 is extra special as she gets to share 6 months of her reign as a sister queen to her real life sister. VIDEO: Audrey Eckert – Miss Nebraska Teen USA 2020

What is your biggest goal in life and how are you working towards it?
To continue using my platform “Be Memorable, Mentor” to impact the youth I work with by promoting volunteering, confidence building and leadership. My goal is to continue this effort at UNL in the fall. While majoring in business I plan to compete with over 150 cheerleaders for a spot on the Husker Spirit Squad. As captain of the Lincoln East Cheer team and my competitive cheer team “Lady X”, I want to take my mentoring, leadership and communication skills to the UNL campus.

What is the biggest change you want to see in the world for women?
I want to see a change in women’s confidence, learning to be authentic and not worrying about comparing ourselves to one another but rather building one another up. We are all created unique and special and I want women to know that we rock the skin we’re in. We each have a formula for confidence that works for us and inspires us. We need to trust in our own brilliance, listen to our gut and know that we each have a special message to share with the world.

What personal achievement are you proud of the most?
Being selected out of 200 individuals as the captain of four major cheerleading squads and leading them to the state championship, while maintaining academic excellence, serving as a student ambassador, National Honor Society member, a four year honor roll student and an AP student holding a 4.0 GPA.

What makes you feel “Confidently Beautiful”?
When I am on the runway I feel confidently beautiful. Working as a Jovani “IT Girl” finalist in Atlanta and New York City has fueled my confidence. My spectrum of feeling confidently beautiful also spreads to mentoring and lending my talents to young girls striving to obtain their dreams and goals. Together these experiences help me to be confidently beautiful in all aspects of my everyday life.
